  4. Peninsula, facing the Yellow Sea; population
  5. (1986) 4,500,000. It comprises the naval base
  6. of Lushun (known under 19th-century Russian
  7. occupation as Port Arthur) and the commercial
  8. port of Dalien (formerly Talien/Dairen). Both
  9. were leased to Russia (who needed an ice-free
  10. naval base) 1898, but were ceded to Japan
  11. after the Russo-Japanese War; Lushun was
  12. under Japanese siege June 1904-Jan 1905.
  13. After World War II Lushun was occupied by
  14. Russian airborne troops (returned to China
  15. 1955) and Russia was granted shared
  16. facilities at Dalien (ended on the
  17. deterioration of Sino-Russian relations
